Cattle and horses pose highway danger, tooEMPORIA, Kan. (AP)--Every fall, Kansas law enforcement agencies warn motorists to watch out for deer on the highways. After all, deer accounted for more than 13 percent of all collisions in Kansas last year at a cost of $61 million. But police and insurance adjusters know that deer are not the only four-legged creatures that pose a danger to drivers. Cattle and horses running loose cause plenty of damage from road crashes all year. Lyon County Undersheriff Richard Old said livestock on roadways are reported to the sheriff's office at least several times a week. But he says there's little officers can do, other than call the animals' owners. It's a big problem in Lyon County and most other Kansas counties. Old said his department gets more animal control calls than burglary, theft and property damage complaints. 12/15/08 Date: 12/11/08
