TDA seeks new advisory board members for wine industry development committeeTexas The Texas Department of Agriculture is now accepting new member applications for the Texas Wine Industry Advisory Committee for 2009. The committee, established in 2005 by the 79th Legislature, assists the Texas Department of Agriculture in administering the Texas Wine Industry Development Fund. The fund, also created in 2005, is used for initiatives intended to increase the economic impact of the Texas wine industry. The committee assesses the Texas wine and grape growing industry, and develops recommendations for Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples to promote and expand the industry. "Our partnership with this committee has resulted in the creation of the Wine Grape Investment Pilot Grant Program, which aims at increasing the acreage of grapevines in Texas," Commissioner Staples said. "Together, we can continue to raise awareness of the dynamic wine industry and implement measures to enhance it." With 280 commercial vineyards planted on approximately 2,900 acres and more than 160 wineries, Texas ranks fifth in the nation for wine production. The industry provides a $1.35 billion economic impact to the state's economy. The Texas Wine Industry Development Advisory Committee meets annually to address the status and needs of the Texas wine and grape growing industry. Board member applications are available through the TDA website at www.tda.state.tx.us or by contacting Marca Ewers at 512-475-1615 or marca.ewers@tda.state.tx.us. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 30, 2009. 12/1/08 Date: 11/26/08 Advertisement
