Struggling economy affects Nebraska horse shelter

NORMAN, Neb. (AP)--With the economy sagging, some Nebraska horse shelters are feeling the pinch as donations drop and the number of people giving up their horses increases.

The owners of Break Heart Ranch near Norman say horse rescue operations across the state are struggling. Valerie and John Hinderlider say their own ranch is in need of hay and money to keep their horse rescue going though the winter.

The Hinderliders care for 40 horses each day. The rising cost of hay and feed means the cost of feeding the animals will go up to between $5,000 and $6,000 a month.

In September, another central Nebraska horse shelter--the Best Little Horse House in Hastings--reported that it, too, was having trouble keeping up with hay and feed prices.
