Meeting will discuss oil seed potentialBy Miles Dabovich Texas AgriLife Extension agent, agriculture, Wichita County Texas There is currently a large demand for vegetable oil in the United States and internationally. The two driving forces are high petroleum prices and the associated demand for healthy (low saturated fat) cooking oils, as well as the ever increasing interest in on-farm biodiesel production. Whether oil seed crops are used for biodiesel production or healthy cooking oil choices, canola and other seed crops have unique and rapidly expanding market opportunities. These opportunities are prompting a strong interest from farmers to learn more about producing and market opportunities for these oil seeds. To address many of these questions, Texas AgriLife Extension Service will host a meeting on the feasibility, marketing and agronomics of numerous oilseed crops for Texas including canola, sunflower, safflower, castor, sesame and other potential crops. On-farm biodiesel production will also be discussed and a mobile biodiesel unit will be demonstrated at the end of the meeting. The mobile biodiesel unit, is a fully self contained unit that includes an oilseed press (extruder) and a biodiesel unit (trans esterification process). The unit is set up in a vendor type trailer and everything is very visible. The biodiesel unit can use virgin vegetable oil (from the press) or used cooking oil. At the meeting, plans are to be pressing canola seed and showing the oil and meal resulting from the pressing. Also, we will be making biodiesel. This oilseed meeting will be held Dec. 11 at the Mult-Purpose Event Center. Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the meeting will conclude by 4 p.m. Topics to be covered include: Cost of production, market outlook, economic considerations, markets and delivery points, canola production, sunflower, safflower, sesame and castor production. Any interested in producing oilseed crops, marketing oilseed crops, or on-farm fuel production are encouraged to participate in this meeting. There will be no fee for the meeting and a noon meal is being sponsored by Producers Cooperative Oil Mill. Pesticide applicators will be able to earn 2 CEU's for participating in this meeting. Please RSVP to 940-716-8610 to reserve your lunch. 12/1/08 Date: 11/26/08 Advertisement
