Kansas Commodity Classic scheduled for Dec. 9

Kansas

As Kansas farmers look ahead to 2009, a number of key questions are looming: Can commodity prices rebound to near-historic highs of 2008? Will input prices stabilize? Has the shine worn off the ethanol luster?

Answers to these questions may be found at the annual Kansas Commodity Classic, slated for Dec. 9 at the Holiday Inn, Salina. The Commodity Classic is an annual joint convention of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Corn Growers Association and Kansas Grain Sorghum Producers Association.

The day's educational sessions begin at 9 a.m., when Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polansky leads off with a recap of 2008 and 2009 outlook. The general session continues with a keynote presentation focusing on the "Strength of the Agricultural Economy," followed by an Ag Production Issues panel discussion on the relationship between agricultural credit, grain marketing and crop inputs. The morning session concludes with a post-election update on federal government issues.

Following a complimentary luncheon, a serious of breakout sessions will allow farmers to gain valuable insight into the 2009 crop year. Sessions include:

--Fertilizer Supply, Demand and Costs;

--Alternative Land Lease Agreements;

--End of Year Tax Planning for Farmers;

--Rural Development Opportunities;

--Marketing Strategies.

An ice cream break featuring Call Hall Ice Cream from Kansas State University--a Kansas Commodity Classic tradition--separates the first and second breakout sessions.

"The Kansas Commodity Classic focuses on the financial aspects of agriculture. With the rollercoaster year we've experienced, the presentations at this year's Classic will be especially relevant to all growers," said Jere White, executive director of the KCGA and KGSPA.

"The Kansas Commodity Classic is known for providing farmers top-notch information about current issues and trends in production agriculture," said Dusti Fritz, CEO of Kansas Wheat. "It's a great opportunity not only for producers to get a start on the 2009 planning, but to network with other farmers from throughout the state."

The Commodity Classic is free to farmers, but pre-registration is encouraged, by calling 866-759-4328.

Commission groups schedule meetings

Each commodity group hosting the Kansas Commodity Classic will have meetings coinciding with the event. The schedule includes:

--Kansas Corn Commission, 1 p.m., Dec. 8;

--Kansas Corn Growers Association Annual Meeting and Kansas Corn Commission Dinner, 6 p.m., Dec. 8;

--Kansas Wheat Strategic and Long-Term Planning Committee, 4 p.m., Dec. 8;

--Kansas Sorghum Producers Association Annual Meeting, 3:45 p.m., Dec. 9;

--Kansas Association of Wheat Growers Policy Committee, 5 p.m., Dec. 9;
