KFU Convention slated for Jan. 9 and 10 in HutchinsonConvention Banquet to be held in Salt Mine Museum Kansas 2009 will be the year for changes at the Kansas Farmers Union Convention to be held Jan. 9 and 10, 2009 at the Grand Prairie Hotel in Hutchinson, Kan., according to Kansas Farmers Union President Donn Teske. In response to KFU members, the Convention will be more streamlined this year. It will have a shorter schedule, less speakers and more time for discussions and sightseeing. The Convention Banquet will be quite unusual and very different. It will be held 650 feet below the surface in the Hutchinson Salt Mine Museum. The Banquet ticket will include a tram tour of the Salt Mine, a tour of the Salt Mine Museum and the evening Banquet. "This will be a no-tie convention," Teske said. "We plan to have a very casual convention and the Convention Banquet will be a good old country barbecue". National Farmers Union President Tom Buis; Dr. Daryll E. Ray, director of the Agricultural Policy Analysis Center at the University of Tennessee; John Hansen, president of the Nebraska Farmers Union; Katy Ziegler, vice-president of Government Relations for the National Farmers Union; Amy Bickel, farm reporter for the Hutchinson News; Larry Mitchell, director of Governmental Affairs for the American Corn Growers Association; Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polansky; Stan Brown, Midwest Regional Manager for Farmers Union Insurances; and Kim Moore, president of the United Methodist Health Ministries Fund, will head up a long list of dignitaries to speak at the 2009 KFU State Annual Convention. There is a possibility that Representative Nancy Boyda will attend. The convention will officially convene Jan. 9, at 10 a.m., and speakers will address the convention theme, "It's The Economy, ******!" Convention delegates will consider and adopt a policy and by-laws statement for 2009 and will also elect officers and board members to steer the KFU for the coming year. In addition, delegates will be elected to represent KFU at the 2009 NFU Annual Convention to be held March 8 to 10, 2009 at the Hyatt Crystal City, Washington D.C. The convention will begin Jan. 9 with nominations for the various offices of Farmers Union and delegates will consider and adopt policy for the upcoming year. Stan Brown, Midwest Regional Manager for Farmers Union Insurances, will give the annual Insurance Report and Adrian Polansky, Kansas Secretary of Agriculture, will report to the delegates and guests at the Jan. 9 luncheon. During the Jan. 9 afternoon general session, there will be a special panel discussion that members and guests will not want to miss. The panel discussion will be moderated by Amy Bickel of the Hutchinson News and the theme for the discussion will be, "How The Current Economy Will Affect Agriculture." There will be two special panelists: Dr. Daryll E. Ray of the University of Tennessee, who is very well known for his continuing analysis of the U.S. Economy and its' affect on agricultural. The other panelist will be NFU President Tom Buis, who has represented agriculture in Washington, D.C. for many years. There will be plenty of time for their opening remarks and a question and answer period. A very special Convention Banquet will be held in the evening Jan. 9. Members and guests participating in the Convention Banquet must be at the Hutchinson Salt Mine Museum no later than 4 p.m. The evening will include a tour of the mine and museum, plus the evening Banquet, at which NFU President Tom Buis will give the featured presentation. Representative Nancy Boyda, who lost her bid for re-election, but will still be in office, may attend the afternoon panel and speak at the evening Banquet also. On Jan. 10 at the 7:30 a.m., Washington Breakfast, Katy Ziegler, National Farmers Union Director Government Relations, will give an agricultural policy update. Jan. 10 will also include a series of reports which include: the President's Report given by KFU President Donn Teske; a presentation by Nebraska Farmers Union President, John Hansen; and a legislative update given by Larry Mitchell, Director of Governmental Affairs for the American Corn Growers Association. The Farmers Union Luncheon at noon will feature Kim Moore, President of the United Methodist Health Ministries Fund. In the afternoon Jan. 10, delegates and guests will have a chance to visit, shop and tour the many interesting sites of Hutchinson. "Delegates, members and guests should make their reservations early", KFU President Donn Teske commented. "We expect to have a great crowd this year and the hotel will hold a block of rooms for Farmers Union members until Dec. 26, so plan to make your reservations before then. We hope people will make an extra effort to attend this special issues-oriented convention and help us chart our direction for 2009."
