Fairview FFA attends National ConventionOklahoma Five outstanding members of the Fairview FFA Chapter attended the 81st Annual National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. These students were Chelsey Hunt, Jessica Bisel, Kela Kelln, Ashlyn Spradlin and Chacey Schoeppel. All competed at the national level in various competitions. Chelsey Hunt, the 2007-2008 Fairview FFA president now a freshman at Oklahoma State University, placed first at the 2008 Oklahoma State Convention, qualifying for the national competition in the Career Development Event of Job Interview. Jessica Bisel, a freshman at UCO who served the Fairview chapter in high school for several years, joined fellow FFA members Ashlyn Spradlin and Chacey Schoeppel for the Career Development Event of Marketing Plan, marketing www.oklahomashowgoats.com, a website owned and operated by Kela Kelln. Bisel and Spradlin received the 1st place award at the state level with Kelln, and Schoeppel joined the team when Kelln was named as a national proficiency qualifier. The team received the Bronze Recognition. Kelln was one of four national finalists for a national proficiency in Agricultural Communications, with her website www.oklahomashowgoats.com. In addition to competing, the members accompanied by Tammy Kelln and FFA Advisor Mindi Clark also had the opportunity to enjoy the full experience of the National FFA Convention and Indianapolis, attending the general sessions, exploring the FFA Career Show and even going ice skating. In addition to the Fairview FFA Chapter having success at the convention, so was the story for Oklahoma FFA. Laila Hajji, of Guthrie, was named the National FFA Organization's Central Region Vice President. Hajji will serve the organization for the 2008-2009 year. Travis Schnaithman, of Garber, was named the American Star Farmer, one of the highest awards available at the national level. Oklahoma also had more proficiency winners and finalists than any other state. Winners included Nicole Folger, Burlington; Tyler Schafer, Lomega; Kalin Jenkins, Stillwater; Sage Shoulders, Oilton; Rashelle Blakley, Oologah; and Kellie Whipple, Alva. All winners received a $1,000 scholarship. Chase Kokojan, Drummond, was named the Agri-Entrepreneurship National Winner, receiving a $1,000 scholarship. Lacey Newlin of Burlington was named a Gold Emblem Individual in Zoology, Division II in the Agriscience Fair and 186 Oklahoma FFA members received the American FFA Degree. The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Famers of America, is a national youth organization of 500,823 student members- all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture--as a part of 7,358 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988 in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education.
