Cattle on feed numbers released

South Dakota: South Dakota's 1,000-plus capacity feedlots reported 200,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on Nov. 1, according to the South Dakota office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 5,000 head from a year earlier but up 25,000 head from a month earlier.

Placements during October totaled 70,000 head, down 1,000 head from last year but up 14,000 head from September 2008.

Marketings of fed cattle during October totaled 43,000 head, down 2,000 head from last year and down 1,000 head from September 2008.

Other disappearance during October totaled 2,000 head, up 1,000 head from last year but unchanged from September 2008.

Nebraska: Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.31 million cattle on feed on Nov. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. This inventory was down 4 percent from last year and 5 percent below Nov. 1, 2006.

Placements during October totaled 590,000 head, down 5 percent from 2007 but 5 percent above 2006.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of October totaled 375,000 head, up 7 percent from last year and 14 percent above October two years ago. This is the highest October marketings since the data series began in 1993. Other disappearance during October totaled 15,000 head compared with 10,000 during October 2007 and 2006.

Iowa: There were 682,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market in all feedlots in Iowa on Nov. 1, up 3 percent from Oct. 1, but down 16 percent from Nov. 1, 2007. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head had 485,000 head on feed, up 2 percent from last month but down 12 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head had 197,000 head on feed, up 4 percent from last month but down 26 percent from last year.

Placements during October totaled 139,000 head, up 25 percent from last month but down 19 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head placed 104,000 head, up 28 percent from last month but down 13 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head placed 35,000 head. This is up 17 percent from last month but down 33 percent from last year.

Marketings for October were 119,000 head, up 13 percent from last month but down 8 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head marketed 93,000 head, up 24 percent from last month and up 18 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head marketed 26,000 head, down 13 percent from last month and 48 percent from last year. Other disappearance totaled 2,000 head.

Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.71 million head on Nov. 1, down 10 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was up 5 percent from the Oct. 1 level. Producers placed 630,000 head in commercial feedlots during October, down 10 percent from a year ago but up 24 percent from last month.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 495,000 head during October, down 7 percent from last year but up 1 percent from last month.

On Oct. 1, there were 2.3 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 85 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 11 percent from last year and up 4 percent from the October total.

October placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 523,000 head, up 18 percent from the September total. Marketings were up 2 percent from last month to 420,000 head.

Oklahoma: The inventory of cattle on feed was 320,000 head in Oklahoma on Nov. 1, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, up 2 percent from the previous month and down 4 percent from Nov. 1, 2007. Placements during October were 75,000, 1 percent above one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during October were 68,000, up 8 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during October totaled 2,000 head.

Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on Nov. 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.23 million head, down 8 percent from a year ago but up 3 percent from October 1.

Placements during October totaled 450,000 head, down 15 percent from a year ago and 7 percent below September 2008 placements of 485,000 head.

Marketings during October totaled 360,000 head, 12 percent below October 2007 and 10 percent below September 2008. Other disappearance was 20,000 head, up 10,000 from a year ago and up 5,000 from the previous month. The percent of October placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 22 percent; 600-699 pounds, 27 percent; 700-799 pounds, 28 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 23 percent.

United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.0 million head on Nov. 1. The inventory was 7 percent below Nov. 1, 2007 and 8 percent below Nov. 1, 2006.

Placements in feedlots during October totaled 2.44 million, 11 percent below 2007 but slightly above 2006. Net placements were 2.37 million head. During October, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 700,000, 600-699 pounds were 615,000, 700-799 pounds were 543,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 580,000.

Marketings of fed cattle during October totaled 1.81 million, 3 percent below 2007 but 3 percent above 2006.

Other disappearance totaled 67,000 during October, 43 percent above 2007 but 17 percent below 2006.
