35th Annual Southeast Colorado Bull Test officially begins

By Bruce Fickenscher

CSU Extension Agent, Test Coordinator

Colorado

The Southeast Colorado Bull Test began its 35th year Nov. 18. Forty-four bulls are entered from ten cooperators. Breeds represented include: Polled and Horned Hereford, Angus, Salers, Irish Black, and British White. All of the bulls were received at the feedlot Oct. 28 and have concluded a three week adjustment period. The feed ration will again be a growing ration designed to develop the bulls to be used for breeding as yearlings without carrying excessive finish.

Weigh days are set for Dec. 30, (34 days on test) and Feb. 3, 2009, (77 days on test). The 112 day test will conclude on March 10, 2009, with the last weigh day. Bulls have all tested negative BVD persistently infected and will under go Breeding Soundness Exams, be Ultra-sound measured for carcass traits, and be Trich tested upon completion of the test. Sale date for the bulls is set for noon, April 14, 2009, at Winter Livestock Commission Company in La Junta, Colo.

Averages for the bulls at the start of the feeding period this year include: 264 days of age, 738 pound beginning weight, and a 2.81 pound weight per day of age. The performance testing program is conducted with the cooperation of Trail City Livestock, Holly, Colo., the Southeast Colorado Bull Test Association, Colorado State University Extension, and the staff of the Kiowa County Extension Office in Eads, Colo.

Reports will be published after each of the weigh days. Producers wishing to receive a report are asked to contact the Kiowa County Extension Office at 719-438-5321. Reports may also be viewed online at: http://kiowacounty.colostate.edu and clicking on the "Agriculture Programs" icon.

Mr. Bruce Fickenscher.
I am a Normande Beef Cattle breeder in Wisconsin.
I have entered bulls for 7 years at the St Croix Valley Bull Test in northwest Wisconsin. I would be interested in the possibility of entering 1 or 2 bulls at your 2009 bull test. I would appreciate your reply and direction for me to pursue this.
Thank you,
Jeff Bock
