Variety of plants featured at garden demonstration field days

Home Demonstration Garden Field Days are underway at Iowa State University's Research and Demonstration Farms.

The public is welcome to participate in the field days, which this year feature a variety of tomatoes, herbs, watermelons and flowers. At least eight varieties of heirloom and modern tomato varieties will be on display, as well as 40 types of herbs, personal-sized watermelons and flowers, including unusual ones with green blooms.

Homemade ice cream will be served at the garden field days at the Horticulture Station, Northern, Northeast and Armstrong farms.

Directions to the field days at the farms follow the schedule. Look for field day groups or signs marking the gardens.

--Muscatine Island, Aug. 4, 6:30 p.m.

--Horticulture Station, Aug. 5, 6:30 p.m.

--Armstrong, Aug. 6, 6:30 p.m.

--Northern, Aug. 7, 6:30 p.m.

The Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm is located 11 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. Highway 59 and a quarter mile east on County Road B-62.

The Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm is located 1.2 miles west of Nashua on Highway B60. After taking the Nashua exit off of Highway 27 (218), go one mile south on gravel (Windfall Avenue) and 0.2 miles east on 290th Street.

The Muscatine Island Research and Demonstration Farm is located at 111 North St. at Fruitland. From Highway 61/92 and east at G38/North Street. The farm is on the south side of the road.

The Horticulture Research Station is located three miles north of Ames on Highway 69, turn east on 170th St. about 1.5 miles. The farm is on the north side of the road.

The Armstrong Research and Demonstration Farm is located 11 miles southwest of Atlantic on Highway 6, a 1/2 mile south on M53 and 3/4 mile east on gravel.

The Northern Research and Demonstration Farm is located 310 S. Main St., just south of Kanawha on County Road R-35.
