Take the "Eat Local" challenge to celebrate Colorado Proud MonthColorado Summer is here and Colorado products are abundant at grocery stores, farmers' markets and restaurants across the state. In an effort to promote Colorado agriculture, Governor Bill Ritter has declared August as Colorado Proud Month. "August is the perfect time to buy local products," said John R. Stulp, Commissioner of the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "Buying products with the Colorado Proud logo shows our commitment to Colorado farmers who are hard at work providing us with safe, fresh, abundant food." Colorado residents are encouraged to participate in an "Eat Local" challenge during August by eating foods that are only grown, raised or processed in the state. "Whether you take on the challenge for a day or the whole month, this a fun way to get people to be more conscious about where their food comes from, how it is grown, and to connect with the farming and ranching community in Colorado," said Stulp. Colorado agribusinesses contribute nearly $16 billion annually to the state economy and provide more than 105,000 jobs. Colorado ranks in the country's top 10 for production of more than 30 agricultural products. Colorado Proud, created by the Colorado Department of Agriculture in 1999, promotes locally grown, raised or processed products to consumers statewide. Currently, the program has more than 950 members that include growers, processors, restaurants, retailers and associations.
