NDA issues importation embargoes for California, New Mexico beef cattle and bisonNebraska The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has issued importation embargoes for beef cattle and bison entering the state from California and New Mexico. The embargoes have been issued due to recent discoveries of tuberculosis positive animals and the anticipated downgrade to Tuberculosis Modified Accredited Advanced status in those states. The embargoes will require beef cattle and bison entering Nebraska from these states to be handled as originating from a Tuberculosis Modified Accredited Advanced status state, and are in addition to the dairy cattle importation embargo that was amended in June. "The importation embargoes take effect immediately," said State Veterinarian Dr. Dennis Hughes. "The health of our state's livestock is our utmost concern, and the additional requirements in this importation embargo help to safeguard our animals, as well as our livestock production industry." Individuals planning to import beef cattle or bison into Nebraska from California or New Mexico should contact the NDA, Bureau of Animal Industry, at 800-572-2437 for more information. The complete importation embargoes can be found at www.agr.ne.gov, under Animal Health. 8/4/08 Date: 7/30/08 Advertisement
