Guge Family Farms receives National Environmental Stewardship AwardIowa In March 2008, it was announced that the Guge Family Farms had been selected for the Iowa Cattlemen's Association Environmental Stewardship Award and nominated by ICA for consideration in the NCBA Environmental Stewardship Award Program. In July 2008, Guge Family Farms was selected as one of only seven regional winners of the NCBA Environmental Stewardship Award. States included in Region III are Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. Recipients of this award are recognized for conducting stewardship practices that serve as exemplary models for all cattle producers. Recipients work to protect and improve the environment and have proven that stewardship and good business can go hand-in-hand. The Guge family operates a cow/calf and feedlot business in Northwest Iowa. The Guge farm also consists of permanent pastures, forage and row crops of corn and soybeans. Family members who are actively involved with the operation include Mark and wife Norma, daughters Sara and Erin along with Sara's husband Mark More. Their work has previously been recognized with the Tenant Award for contour and terrace work, the Forage Management Award and the Pasture Management Award. Mark also received the Iowa Peace Award in 1992 for his involvement in showing economic and ecological solutions for a prairie restoration project. "The Guges are masters of using variable land resources with a diversified livestock and crop operation. They are most deserving of this award," said Craig White, ICA Regional Vice President from Estherville. ICA is now looking for candidates for the 2009 Iowa Environmental Stewardship Award.
