Farm Bureau invites Iowans to 'Join The Ride' during 2008 fair

Indy E-85 pace car, great giveaways featured at Farm Bureau Park

Iowa

From wind and conservation to biofuels and a low carbon footprint, farmers and Iowans have led the charge to embrace a suite of renewable energy alternatives. The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation invites all fairgoers to "Join the Ride" for renewable energy at Farm Bureau Park during the 2008 Iowa State Fair and win a chance for prizes from an HHR Flex-Fuel vehicle to $1,000 in free ethanol. The Iowa State Fair is Aug. 7 to 17.

Race into the Park and have your photo taken with the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 E-85 Indy Pace Car any day of the fair. Once there, you can learn about steps Farm Bureau members have taken to conserve and embrace alternative energy. Have you ever wondered how carbon credits work? Stop by on Tuesday, Aug. 12, and hear how AgraGate Climate Credits Corporation manages their unique national program and encourages conservation friendly, no-till farming. On Friday, Aug. 15, watch The Energy Center and farmers with wind farms showcase the impact of wind energy in Iowa.

Also, sign up for Farm Bureau giveaways throughout the fair. All visitors will be eligible to enter a drawing for $1,000 in free ethanol fuel, courtesy of Kum & Go and Iowa Farm Bureau. Those who join Farm Bureau during the fair will receive a $10 ethanol gas card and go into a drawing for a 2008 Polaris-300 ATV. All Farm Bureau members will have a chance to win a 2009 Chevy Flex-Fuel HHR, courtesy of the Premier 10 Chevy Dealers.

"Iowans are enthusiastic about expanding our energy alternatives," said Craig Lang, Iowa Farm Bureau president. "Our country's energy crisis won't be solved by any one resource, but a combination of renewable energy sources--like the ones we're developing here in Iowa--can bring us closer to energy independence. We just need to commit ourselves to the right balance of conservation, research, innovation and exploration to get the job done."

Energy is the primary focus of the 2008 Farm Bureau Park, but it offers much more. Once again, free health care screenings will be available to all visitors. Blood pressure, glaucoma, facial skin cancer, breast cancer, body fat, vein, body mass index, blood sugar, lung function and hearing screenings will be offered on designated days. Visitors also will have a chance to get mini-risk evaluations, healthy sleep evaluations and MedCards on select days. New this year, Farm Bureau health coaches will be at the Park to provide useful tips.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, the 26th annual Governor's Charity Steer Show will take place at 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion. The show promotes beef and raises money to aid families staying at Ronald McDonald Houses.

Tuesday, Aug. 12 is Farm Bureau Day at the Iowa State Fair, which will feature the 45th annual Farm Bureau Cookout Contest, held on the Grand Concourse. To celebrate this milestone, past champions of the state contest have been invited to participate in an exclusive deer meat category. The hunt for a new champion will bring out a new crop of the best grillers in Iowa; so, bring your family for food and fun! Judging starts at 10 a.m., and the winners take the stage at noon. Free samples are available.

Other events on Farm Bureau Day include the following:

--State Young Farmer Ag Challenge Contest, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Homemakers and Variety Theatres in the Maytag Family Center. The finals start at 5:30 p.m.

--Century Farm Awards, 9:30 a.m. at Budweiser Stage, south of the Varied Industries building. This year 344 Century Farms will be recognized.
