Dairy University encourages economic growth for western Kansas

Kansas

Dairy University is back by popular demand! The event will host nationally known experts in the dairy industry and state agency experts to discuss the issues you need to know to develop the dairy industry in your community. Dairy University, sponsored by Western Kansas Rural Economic Development Alliance, is scheduled for Aug. 26 to 27 in Dodge City.

"Dairy University strives to raise awareness among community and business leaders about the economic benefit of the dairy industry to western Kansas," said Gabe Schlickau, Economic Development Manager for Black Hills Energy and current wKREDA president. "By gaining more knowledge of key issues and economic drivers, we hope to enhance the capacity of the region to experience continued growth in the dairy sector."

This program is designed to enhance an individual's knowledge about factors affecting the growth of the dairy industry. From regulatory issues to economic impacts, the information shared in this session will give people additional knowledge to make them more proficient in supporting the industry.

"Participants will get up-to-date information about key issues from leading subject matter experts," said Schlickau. "The highlight of the first day will be the opportunity to tour local dairies and see first-hand how they are developed and operate. Day two will include discussions on economic trends, water resources, financing and regulatory issues. Those attending Dairy University can apply this information immediately in their efforts to grow the dairy industry in Western Kansas."

You may be wondering, why dairy? The economic impact of the dairy industry is tremendous. Like the beef industry, dairy operations add to the local demand for feed and services, while also offering the opportunity for the growth of ancillary service and support industries. Dairy operations bring jobs to rural areas, add children to the schools and contribute greatly to the local tax base.

WKREDA's represents 53 counties in western Kansas and its mission is to work together for the common good of western Kansas. The purpose and objectives of the wKREDA shall be to promote the exchange of ideas and information among members to enhance their effectiveness in their local organizations and the wKREDA region; to provide its members educational, legislative, and recruitment opportunities and other resources to assist in local and regional community and rural development efforts; and to revitalize western Kansas through cooperative, community and rural development activities.

Dairy University is a free event, but it is asked that you please RSVP by Aug. 22. If you have any questions or are interested in attending Dairy University, please contact Joann Knight at 800-381-3690 or 620-227-9501.
