2008 Creative Cooks Contest in Morgan County, Col.

Come enjoy the special foods that Morgan County 4-H members prepare at the 2008 Creative Cooks Contest Friday, August 1, at the Fairgrounds Event Center in Brush.

Eleven 4-H members will be preparing their entries. Recipes for the entries include Checkboard Cheese Sandwiches, Colorado Cowboy Caviar, Chicken How So, S'Mores Cheesecake, and Banana Split Trifle. In addition, Cloverbud 4-Hers will be sharing Berry Blast, Fruit Salad, Fishy Fruit Dip and Fruit Kabobs, and Ladybugs.

In Creative Cooks, the 4-H member plans and presents a meal by creating a menu and preparing one item from the menu. This involves planning a theme and selecting a place setting and centerpiece that follows the theme. Entries are evaluated on creativity, table setting, taste and presentation of food prepared, nutritional knowledge about the menu, and food safety.

There is also a special category for entries that feature a Colorado Specialty Food. This includes specialty grains such as quinoa or amaranth, beans like black turtle or adzuki, as well as wild game, fish or fowl that is harvested in Colorado.

Judging of 2008 Creative Cooks begins at 9:45 a.m. and the awards will be presented at 11:30. Following awards, the public is invited to sample foods from the winning exhibits and receive a booklet with all recipes.

The top entries of each category will be eligible to compete at the state Creative Cooks Contest held during the Colorado State Fair on August 23.
