Wind farm planned

PRESHO, S.D. (AP)--The approval of three towers that will measure wind in Lyman County may be the first step in construction of what could be one of South Dakota's largest wind farms.

Ulteig Engineering in Sioux Falls has received approval from the county commission for permits to construct three tall meteorological towers that measure wind speed.

Kim Halverson, a Lyman County commissioner, said Pulse told commissioners that a wind farm will be constructed in the area by 2010.

"It's a big deal," Halverson said.

While Pulse did not give an exact number of turbines included in the rumored wind farm, Halverson said there is speculation by area residents that up to 120 towers could be constructed.

"It was never (officially) said," he said. "All the company asked for was permission to put up these three meteorological towers."

A firm named PPM Energy , now known as Iberdrola Renewables, has distributed wind-energy literature in Lyman County.
