Weather conditions benefit ranges, pasturesColorado Most of Colorado experienced above average amounts of moisture during the week ending Aug. 17, and temperatures averaged below normal levels, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Aug. 18. These conditions are benefiting pasture and rangeland and should improve late season crops. Producers were allowed 4.6 days in the field for operations. Spring barley completed the turning color stage and was 25 percent harvested in mostly good condition. Spring wheat was 89 percent turning color, 20 percent harvested and is rated in mostly good condition. The 2008 corn crop completed the silking stage. The crop was 48 percent at or beyond the dough stage with the crop in mostly fair to good condition last week. Sorghum was 85 percent headed, 70 percent turning color, and 1 percent mature with the crop in mostly fair condition by week's end. Pasture and range conditions across Colorado were rated mostly fair to very poor. Second cutting alfalfa was 89 percent complete while third cutting was 18 percent complete. The crop was rated in mostly good to fair condition. Death losses for cattle were rated average while sheep and lambs were rated just below average.
