Sorghum field day planned at Chester

Nebraska

Sorghum farmers are invited to attend the 2008 Sorghum Hybrid Plot Field Day to be held Sept. 4 at the James Vorderstrasse farm at Chester, Neb. The event starts at 5 p.m., with a tour of the Hybrid Plot, which is located one-fourth mile east of 5800 D Road. The hybrid plot is sponsored annually by the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers Association, UNL Cooperative Extension, the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, participating seed companies, and agri business.

"We'll have representatives from the commercial seed companies on hand to discuss their plot entries," said James Vorderstrasse, NeGSPA Director and Plot Coordinator. "Farmers will be able to see and evaluate field performance for themselves."

A barbeque dinner, featuring sorghum brownies for dessert, will be served at 7 p.m. The evening program will include an address by Dr. Ray Ward, Ward Laboratories and Paul Hay, UNL Extension educator, to discuss best practices in returning CRP acres to row crop production

"Nutrient requirements and tillage are issues that need careful consideration when putting CRP ground back into crop production," stated Vorderstrasse. "Dr. Ward and Paul Hay have extensive experience in successfully working with farmers to accomplish this."

The event will also include a yield guessing contest and door prizes.

Directions: One-fourth mile east of 5800 D Road OR two miles north of Chester to D Road and one and three-fourths miles west. The plot is clearly marked with a NeGSPA sign.
