Ringwood FFA member attends Hereford Junior National Show

Oklahoma

The Junior National Hereford Show was held July 14 to 18 at Kansas City, Mo. Attending from Ringwood, Okla., was Lathan Nichols, son of Kyndell and Michelle Nichols. Over the seven day event he took part in numerous events with other young people who represented 40 different states. Nichols participated in the livestock judging contest held July 15 and on July 16 he was a semi-finalist in the Intermediate showmanship contest.

The final event of the week was the show itself, where 1,100 head were shown over three days. The first day of the show Nichols showed an April yearling heifer bred and owned and placed 4th. The following day he showed that heifer owned and placed 6th. On the final day of the show he exhibited a March yearling who stood 2nd in her class.

During the week, the Oklahoma members stalled together. Breakfast and lunch was provided by the state association and parents. The time together allowed the junior members to become better acquainted and to renew old friendships. It also provided time for the group to start making plans for the 2009 Hereford Junior National Show which will be held July 4 to 11 in Tulsa, Okla. The group is aware a lot of hard work will be necessary to make the event a success, but are looking forward to hosting. With gas costs as high as they are, they feel it will be a good opportunity for many Oklahoma show families to make plans on attending a national event in their state.
