Mild weather brings precipitationKansas Weather remained mild, along with scattered precipitation across most of the state during the week ending Aug. 17, with some counties receiving greater than 2 inches, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Aug. 18. Producers averaged 4.2 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated at 2 percent very short, 13 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 7 percent very short, 18 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Primary farm activities involved cutting hay, irrigating and spraying herbicides on row crops and preparing for silage harvest and wheat planting. Seventy-three percent of the corn is in the dough stage, compared to 87 percent last year and 86 percent for the 5-year average. Thirty-seven percent has dented, compared to 57 percent in 2007 and 51 percent for the 5-year average. Three percent of corn has matured, compared to 9 percent last year and 12 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 41 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Seventy-two percent of the sorghum is headed, compared to 80 percent for the previous year and 75 percent for the 5-year average. Fourteen percent is coloring, compared to 18 percent last year and 20 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. Eighty percent of cotton is setting bolls, compared to 96 percent for last year and 78 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated 5 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Fifty-six percent of sunflowers are blooming, compared to 82 percent last year and 77 percent for the 5-year average. Eight percent is in the ray flower dry stage, the same as 2007 but behind the 5-year average of 14 percent. Sunflower condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Eighty-three percent of the third cutting of alfalfa has been completed, compared to 87 percent for the previous year and 88 percent for the 5-year average. Ten percent of the fourth cutting has been completed, compared to 18 percent last year and 20 percent for the 5-year average. Range and pasture conditions were rated at 6 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 8 percent short, 88 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
