McAlester livestock sales report

The McAlester Union Livestock Market, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 2,485 head Aug. 19, compared to 1,350 head last week and 2,175 head last year, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, stocker and feeder steers were steady with the exception of 300- to 400-pound steers that were $3 to $6 higher. Stocker and feeder heifers were steady to $1 higher. Demand was improving on lightweight cattle with moisture and cooler weather prevailing. Cattle were in medium to fleshy condition with many more average to attractive cattle. Receipts included 42% steers, 9 heifers with 28% feeder cattle over 600 pounds. Slaughter bulls were steady. Slaughter cows were steady to $2 lower with quality and weigh-ups a major factor. A total of 215 cows and bulls sold with 70% to packers.

Boners, 55 head, 80 to 85% lean, 1000 to 1475 lbs., 57.00 to 61.00; high dressing, 62.00 to 67.00; low dressing, 52.00 to 56.50. Lean, 27 head, 85 to 90% lean, 950 to 1325 lbs., 52.50 to 56.00; high dressing, 57.00 to 58.00; low dressing, 47.50 to 51.50. Light, 38 head, 85 to 90% lean, 725 to 1000 lbs., 47.00 to 51.00; high dressing, 51.50 to 55.00; low dressing, 43.00 to 46.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 34 head, 1250 to 2125 lbs., 74.00 to 77.00; high dressing, 78.00 to 80.00; low dressing, 69.00 to 72.50.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 2 to 6 years old, 1000 to 1275 lbs., 4 to 8 months bred, average blacks, 790.00 to 870.00.
