Local students attend leadership summit

Oklahoma

Six outstanding Fairview High School students participated in the American Farmers and Ranchers Youth Leadership Summit July 27 to 30 at Quartz Mountain Resort near Lone Wolf, Okla. Kela Kelln, Chase McGolden, Madison McGolden, Chacey Schoeppel, and Paige Van Meter attended as campers and Tara Burchfield participated as part of the AFR Youth Advisory Council.

This year's theme, "Olympic Sized Leaders", focused on teaching students the six elements that make up a leader, including positive attitudes, good choices, strong relationships, respect and helping others.

The feature speakers this year included Kelly Barnes of Edmond, Okla., and Casey Kennedy also of Edmond. They challenged students to set short and long-term goals, while engaging them in fun-filled activities and games that challenged them to step out of their comfort zone, interact with others and discover their leadership potential.

The AFR Youth Leadership Summit is a program of the education branch of the American Farmers and Ranchers Mutual Insurance Company. AFR was established as the Oklahoma Farmers Union in 1905 while America was dealing with the industrial revolution. Today, with nearly 100,000 family memberships across the state of Oklahoma, a portion of the income generated by insurance premiums is used to support family agriculture and rural Oklahoma. The AFR offers a wide variety of educational programs and activities such as speech contests, poster contests, leadership tours, and camps to teach the youth of Oklahoma citizenship, social responsibility and brotherhood. The organization awards more than $25,000 in scholarships annually.

The AFR Leadership Summit is planned and conducted by the AFR Leadership Advisory Council. The 2007-2008 members were Tara Burchfield, Fairview; Maverick Squires, Noble; Cheyenne Allen, Newcastle; Jordan Lindsay, Grandfield; and Justin Strate, Garber, under the direction of Shelly Bilderback, the AFR Director of Youth and Education. At the Summit, the 2008-2009 Advisory Council was selected by popular vote of the sixty campers present. These council members were announced at the AFR Leadership Summit Camp Banquet the final night. To run for the council, a student must be going into grades 10-12 and have attended the Summit. Brock Herren, El Reno; McKenzie Clifton, Kingfisher; Madison McGolden, Fairview; Maverick Squires, Noble; and Kelby Rounsaville, Tecumseh were elected. These five outstanding individuals will represent the youth of Oklahoma over the next year as well as assisting with various AFR-sponsored events throughout the next year including SeptemberFest at the governor's mansion, speech contests, the State AFR Convention and planning and conducting the Youth Leadership Summit and Agventures Day Camps.
