Juniors recognized for involvement in Hereford industryTen youth were honored with Prospect Awards and Junior Golden Bull Awards for their involvement in the Hereford industry on the local and state level at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City, July 18. Each year the American Hereford Women and the National Junior Hereford Association sponsor the Prospect Awards for youth in third through eighth grades and the Junior Golden Bull Awards for young adults in ninth through 12th grades. Winners are selected from each grade represented based on their written applications. The Prospect Award winners are: Third grade--Peyton Schmitt, Nichols, Iowa; fourth grade--Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas; fifth grade--Brett Jones, Darlington, Wis.; sixth grade--Koby Rogers, Hamilton, Texas; seventh grade--Karly Biddle, Walcott, Iowa; eighth grade--Shelby Rogers, Hamilton, Texas. Each Prospect winner received a picture plaque. Schmitt has been a member of the Iowa and NJHA for three years and has won speaking and showmanship awards at the state level. She won her first registered Hereford heifer in a raffle at the JNHE in Milwaukee. Peyton has shown Herefords at the state and national level and has won division champion honors at the Iowa State Fair. Barber is a veteran in NJHA circles, even at the tender age of ten. She has been a member of the NJHA for seven years and is active in the Texas Junior Hereford Association and the Texas Junior Polled Hereford Association. Barber has won many honors in the showring, including seven grand and supreme championships at major national shows, such as the American Royal, Fort Worth, National Western and JNHE events. Her greatest showring accomplishment was winning supreme champion Hereford heifer over all breeds at the 2008 San Antonio Stock Show. Jones has been actively involved in the NJHA for five years. He is also very active in 4-H and sports teams, including youth hockey, football, soccer and basketball. Jones exhibited his athletic skills by playing on the winning peewee basketball team at the 2007 JNHE. Jones showed his first heifer when he was five years old and won grand champion heifer at the Badger Kickoff. He has also won show awards at the JNHE, along with county fairs, state shows and exhibited the reserve champion bull at the 2005 World Beef Expo. Koby Rogers has been a member of the NJHA for nine years and has also been active in his Texas state junior Hereford associations. He has served in several leadership roles on the state level and was director of the Texas Junior Hereford Association for the past two years. Koby has won his share of awards, including division calf champion heifer at the State Fair of Texas. Rogers is also very involved in 4-H and many school activities such as athletics, National Invent America and the local spelling bee. Biddle has been active in the Iowa Junior Hereford Association and NJHA for five years. She enjoys giving speeches and has participated in contests at the state level as well as the JNHE and World Beef Expo. She won showmanship at the county fair and also won top points for heifers in the state of Iowa. Biddle has exhibited the champion Hereford heifer at her county fair the past three years and last year had the champion Hereford junior bull calf at the World Beef Expo. She is also very active in 4-H, showing other species of livestock, participating in speeches and photography. Shelby Rogers has been a member of the NJHA for nine years and has also been active in the Texas Junior Polled Hereford Association, serving as director and also 2nd vice- president. She has served as a mentor to younger members by working with peewees in team marketing. Rogers won the junior illustrated speech contests at the state and national level. She has also experienced success in the showring by winning grand and reserve grand champion heifer at the State Fair of Texas and was selected reserve champion showman at the Texas State Hereford Show. The Junior Gold Bull Award winners are: ninth grade--Katie Shultz, Dillsburg, Pa.; 10th grade--Tamar Adcock, Assumption, Ill.; 11th grade--Reba Hurst, Nevada, Mo.; 12th grade--Jamie Mickelson, Santa Rosa, Calif. Each Junior Golden Bull Award winner receives a bronze bull trophy. Shultz has been a member of the NJHA for seven years and during that time has competed in four JNHE showmanship contests. She has also helped with organization of her state junior show and served in a leadership role at the Keystone International Livestock Expo. Shultz has won many awards at several state livestock shows. She was crowned master showman twice at the Pennsylvania Farm Show and grand champion beef showman at the York Fair in York, Pa. Shultz is also active in 4-H and has won several state livestock judging contests. Adcock is an active member of the Illinois Junior Hereford Association (IJHA) and the NJHA. She has served on the IJHA board of directors and was instrumental in assisting with the Illinois State Preview Show. Adcock served on the trade show and awards committees for the 2008 JNHE and has served as a mentor at previous junior events. Adcock has competed in showmanship and judging contests and was crowned champion twice in showmanship competition at the Illinois State Fair. She has shown Hereford cattle across the nation and won grand champion awards at the Wisconsin State Fair, Illinois State Fair and the 2006 JNHE. Highlighting Adcock's showring success was exhibiting the reserve grand champion polled female at this year's JNHE. Hurst has been a member of the Missouri Junior Hereford Association and the NJHA for seven years. She has served on the MJHA board of directors and in other leadership roles, including planning membership activities at the Missouri State Fair. Hurst sold tickets to help support the 2008 JNHE, which was held in her home state. She has shown the 4-H champion Hereford heifer at the Missouri State Fair, the Ozark Empire Fair and the champion bull at the Missouri State Fair. Hurst is active in many other activities including 4-H and basketball. Mickelson is active in the California/Nevada Junior Hereford Association and the NJHA. She has served as a director of her state organization and has used her leadership skills to orchestrate the Far Southwest Regional Hereford Field Day the past three years. Mickelson has been awarded many championship titles, including supreme grand champion in several classes at the California State Fair. Her grand champion Hereford bull was selected as lot #1 out of 500 bulls entered in the 2008 Red Bluff Bull Sale. Mickelson has been active in 4-H and FFA and several community service projects. The NJHA is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members. The NJHA's mission is to create and promote enthusiasm for the breed while providing opportunities through leadership, education and teamwork.
