Hereford youth win Golden Bull awardsAudrey Hambright, Bobby Mickelson, Shelly Patton and Joshua VanDeWalle were awarded the 2008 Golden Bull Achievement Award on July 18 at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City. Administered by the Hereford Youth Foundation of America and the American Hereford Women, the scholarships honor National Junior Hereford Association members for their involvement in the Hereford industry. Each junior received an $1,875 scholarship. Hambright, Chapman, Kan., has been very active in the Kansas Junior Polled Hereford Association and the NJHA. She is a past recipient of the Junior Golden Bull award, JNHE Prospect award and the KJPHA Senior Herdsman award. Hambright has won her share of awards in the showring and exhibited a reserve division champion at the American Royal Junior Show. This fall, she will be transferring from Colby Community College in Colby, Kan., to Kansas State University where she will pursue a degree in agriculture business with an emphasis on the beef industry. Mickelson, Santa Rosa, Calif., has been involved in the NJHA for ten years and has experienced success in the showring, winning at the county, state and national level. Mickelson was selected as the 2007/2008 California Seedstock Producer of the Year by the California Cattlemen's Association. He has served in leadership roles in 4-H, FFA and played football and rugby in high school. Mickelson is planning to attend California State University at Chico this fall majoring in animal science. Patton, Danielsville, Ga., is a member of the Georgia Junior Hereford Association and the NJHA and shows cattle at the state and national level. She is also the immediate past president of the Georgia Junior Cattlemen's Association. Patton has been extremely active in 4-H and FFA, winning countless awards, including being a national finalist in FFA beef entrepreneurship proficiency. She also won the 2008 4-H master in achievement award. Patton is a senior at Madison County High School. After graduation, she plans to attend college and pursue a degree in veterinary medicine, specializing as a bovine practitioner. Joshua VanDeWalle, Cedar Rapids, Neb., has been a member of the NJHA for 14 years and has served in leadership roles for the Hereford industry, 4-H and FFA. VanDeWalle has won many awards including an American FFA Degree, the NJHA senior illustrated speech and team marketing contests. VanDeWalle exhibited the champion Hereford bull at the Nebraska State Fair FFA show and the champion junior AI bull at the Nebraska Preview Show. He attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and plans to graduate in 2009 with a double major in animal science and agricultural education. The NJHA is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members. The NJHA's mission is to create and promote enthusiasm for the breed while providing opportunities through leadership, education and teamwork.
