HPWD Board of Directors set public hearings regarding proposed 2008 tax rate

Texas

Residents within the 15-county High Plains Underground Water Conservation District No. 1 service area will have an opportunity to comment on the district's proposed 2008 ad valorem tax rate at two public hearings set for Aug. 21 and Aug. 28 in Lubbock.

Both hearings begin at 11 a.m., and will be held in the A. Wayne Wyatt Board Room at the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District office, 2930 Avenue Q, in Lubbock.

"After reviewing the budget needs and the district's current financial status, the Water District Board of Directors are proposing a 2008 ad valorem tax rate of .00794 per $100 valuation," said District Manager Jim Conkwright.

He added that property tax valuations have increased within the district this year. "While this is the same tax rate as adopted by the board last year, the increased property valuation has caused the proposed tax rate to exceed the 2008 effective tax rate and public hearings are required. Members of the public are encouraged to attend these hearings and express their views," Conkwright said.

The 2008 ad valorem tax rate is expected to be adopted at the Sept. 9 regular board meeting.

Created in 1951, the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District No. 1 provides for the conservation, preservation, protection, recharging, and prevention of waste of groundwater stored in the Ogallala aquifer within its service year. Additional information about the district's programs and activities is available on-line at www.hpwd.com.
