Grazing school set for Aug. 29Kansas On Aug. 29 a Grazing School for producers will be held at the Jackson County Fair Building, starting at 10 a.m. The guest speaker for the day is Dr. Stephan Barnhardt, Iowa State University Forages Specialist. Dr. Barnhardt has extensive knowledge with cool season grasses production and management. His talk will emphasize getting the most production from inputs. He will also discuss stockpiling forages for winter use and managing for multiple species. A lunch is provided, with a Water Quality grant provided by KCARE-Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative crops. Will Boyer, Water Quality Specialist will have displays on alternative watering sources for cattle. The Jackson County Conservation District will also have displays. After lunch we will travel to a pasture and see exclusion cages and the effect of rest periods. David Hallauer, Meadowlark Extension District Crops Agent will discuss Grazing cycles and their effects. Grazing sticks--a tool to measure and manage forages will be given away to the first 100 participants. These sticks are made available by the Kansas Forages and Grassland Council. Measure to Manage will be the discussion led by Meadowlark District Livestock Agent, Jody Holthaus. The day is free to the public, however, we ask that you pre-register in order to have enough materials and meals.
