Farm Bureau leaders serve on state's flood recovery commissionIowa Iowa Farm Bureau leaders and farmers Carlton Kjos and Chad Ingles are serving on the Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission's Agriculture and Environment task force. Kjos is the Iowa Farm Bureau Director of District 1. Ingles is the President of Fayette County Farm Bureau. The commission, chaired by Gen. Ron Dardis of the Iowa National Guard, is charged with helping the newly-created Rebuild Iowa Office identify, prioritize and address short- and long-term issues related to flood recovery. As members of the Agriculture and Environment task force, Kjos and Ingles are responsible for providing an overall assessment of damage, identifying the needs not covered by federal or state disaster funds or organizations, suggesting improvements for existing flood recovery strategies and recommending funding. The full commission met on July 31 and Aug. 11 and will meet again on Aug. 12 in Fort Dodge. Each meeting will include a public input session. The public will also be able to comment during the Iowa State Fair at the Governor's booth in the Varied Industries Building. At the end of August, the commission will collect the public and task force input to begin its report. Iowa Farm Bureau estimates that the floods of 2008 caused $3.5 billion in damage to Iowa cropland, including 1.3 million acres of corn and 2 million acres of soybeans.
