Evaluating cow-calf feed optionsBy Mike Jarosz Weld County Livestock Agent Colorado Cow-calf operation employees, owners, and managers are invited to a program titled "Evaluating Cow-Calf Feed Options" offered by Colorado State University Extension at the Exhibition Building--Room 5 located at Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley. The program will be presented Aug. 13 beginning with registration at 4 p.m., and the program ending at 7:45 p.m. The cost to attend is $10 per person by Aug. 6 and $15 at the door. The goal of the program is to provide attendees with cost-effective feeding options focused on positive cow-calf operation performance. Jack Whittier, Ph.D. CSU Beef Extension specialist, will be presenting alternative local ingredients which can potentially be used to decrease feed costs and continue to maintain performance. Additionally, Dr. Whittier will discuss the idea of limit feeding and grazing winter range versus feeding hay. Kelcey Swyers, a CSU ruminant nutrition Ph.D. graduate student, will be discussing a research study performed in Eastern Colorado which examined the effects of supplementing dried distillers grains to pregnant cows grazing winter range. Swyers will present the costs, cow performance, and logistics of feeding three times per week versus seven. Mike Jarosz, Ph.D. of CSU Extension, will provide examples of least cost cow rations using local ingredients. For an interactive piece to his session, Dr. Jarosz will provide time for the audience to input ingredients and costs to evaluate specific feeding scenarios. Travis Hoffman, Colorado Beef Quality Assurance Coordinator, will focus on cull cow management. Hoffman will discuss the recent 2007 Cull Cow Quality Audit, the cull cow marketing cycle, least cost cull cow management practices, and examine when to feed culls for extra pounds or sell. Supper will be provided and is part of your registration cost.
