Crops tour details released

Kansas

Details of the Aug. 27 Meadowlark Extension District Crops Tour of Jefferson County have been finalized.

Mixing things up this year, we'll kick off the tour at the Elvin Domann farm at Winchester, with discussion of the dryland corn and soybean plots planted there. Discussion of the 23 corn and 18 soybean varieties will begin at 11:30 a.m. Two soybean population strips will also be viewed. Lunch will be served at Domann Farms at 12:30 p.m.

Following lunch, we'll travel to 62nd Street south of Meriden to view a KSU study of herbicide treatments on glyphosate tolerant weeds at 2 p.m. With the weed control challenges experienced this year fresh in our memory (and in some cases more visible than we'd like), Dallas Peterson, Extension Weed Science Specialist will focus on the herbicide tolerant weeds in these plots (corn and soybeans) and what treatments are being used to combat them. Insight from this plot and Dr. Peterson's work during the past year on weed control challenges will make for good pre-planning for 2009.

We'll wrap up the tour at 3:45 p.m., at the 32 variety Irrigated Corn Plot at Grantville, hosted by Rod Bigham.

The Demonstration Plot Tour is sponsored by participating seed companies, Midwest Fertilizer of Nortonville, Farm Bureau Agent Rich Jensen, and Frontier Farm Credit Services. For a flyer, visit www.meadowlark.ksu.edu under the Crops and Soils link or contact your District Extension Office. Hope to see you there.
