Cleveland County 4-H'ers named state record book winners at Roundup

A pair of Cleveland County 4-H'ers took top honors when they were named state record book winners at the 87th State 4-H Roundup that took place recently at Oklahoma State University.

Kylie Stowers, Norman, took top honor in the Ira Hollar advanced leadership record book and Aerial Smith, Lexington, was named the state swine record book winner. Bill Doenges sponsored the $1,000 scholarship presented to Stowers. Stowers is a member of the Trailblazers 4-H Club and has been active 4-H'er for five years. Her main project areas are leadership, citizenship, entomology and horse.

"4-H has taught me time management skills, helped me develop a more positive self-concept and has improved my decision-making skills," Stowers said.

After learning the Life Rocks! Program, Stowers was appointed by Gov. Brad Henry to serve on a tobacco cessation committee. Some of her other 4-H activities and honors include State 4-H Ambassador, state leadership record book winner, level one, grand champion halter gelding at the Southwest District and State 4-H Horse Shows and Cleveland County Hall of Fame.

Some of her other honors include Oklahoma Prudential Award Winner, Kiwanis Club Sophomore of the Year and Norman Chamber of Commerce Tomorrow's Leaders.

Stowers' county leadership roles in 4-H include county president, vice president, secretary and local Trailblazer's club president. Stowers is a student at Norman High School and is the daughter of Terry and Annette Stowers.

Aerial Smith is a member of the Lexington 4-H club where her main project areas include swine and leadership. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Oklahoma Pork Council. In addition to being named a state record book winner, Smith was also recognized as the Southwest District Representative for the state 4-H leadership team. Aerial has been an active 4-H'er for six years and has farrowed, bred and raised more than 125 pigs. She also has taught numerous Pork Quality Assurance classes and educated fellow 4-H'ers on pork nutrition.

Smith said 4-H is a life-changing experience.

"The skills I learn will help me make my community a better place for everyone," she said.

Smith as also taken on a number of leadership roles in the 4-H program, including serving as county vice president and song leader, local club president and Southwest District Reporter. She is a member of student council, served three consecutive years as class president and is a member of the honor society.

Smith is a sophomore at Lexington High School and is the daughter of Ronnie and Lisa Smith.
