Chile harvest nearing half-way markNew Mexico There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Aug. 17, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Aug. 18. Topsoil moisture was 3 percent very short, 27 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Wind damage was 18 percent light and 7 percent moderate. Hail damage was 18 percent light and 7 percent moderate. Alfalfa was mostly good with the third cutting 96 percent complete, the fourth cutting 71 percent complete and the fifth cutting 11 percent complete. Cotton was mostly good with 80 percent setting bolls and 1 percent opening balls. Corn was mostly good with 95 percent silked, 27 percent dough and 15 percent dent. Irrigated sorghum was mostly good with 97 percent headed and 9 percent coloring. Dry sorghum ranged from poor to good with 50 percent headed and 25 percent coloring. Peanuts ranged from fair to good with 80 percent pegging. Lettuce was 80 percent planted. Chiles were mostly good with 43 percent green harvested; pod sets generally average. Apples were mostly fair to good. Pecans were mostly good. Cattle were mostly good. Sheep were mostly good to fair. Range and pastures were mostly good. 8/25/08 Date: 8/21/08 Advertisement
