2008 IFBF Cookout champion, division winners crowned at Iowa State FairIowa The 45th annual Iowa Farm Bureau Cookout Contest celebrated the past and present of an Iowa State Fair staple. John Lengeling of Des Moines is the 2008 Iowa Farm Bureau state cookout champion. Lengeling won the title Aug. 12 with a turkey recipe. Connie Conrad of Delhi beat out six former cookout champions--including Bob Friesen, the original cookout winner in 1964--to take home the deer champion of champions division award. The exclusive champion of champions category was created this year to celebrate the 45-year history of the cookout and past champions. Former cookout winners were encouraged to participate by preparing a meat entrée that used at least 50 percent deer meat. The Iowa Farm Bureau-sponsored contest featured 55 outdoor chefs using their best grilling, roasting and smoking techniques. "This event celebrates an Iowa summer tradition and the value of livestock in this state." said Craig Lang, Iowa Farm Bureau president. "Outdoor barbecuing is a pastime that brings together Iowans of different generations and walks of life, and we're seeing that here today." Cookout champion Lengeling won first place in the turkey category before being selected by the judges as the overall winner. He received $200 and a permanent trophy as the cookout champion and $75 as the turkey category winner.
