Vaccinations recommended after viruses kill horsesMADISON, Wis. (AP)--Wisconsin state veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt is urging horse owners to get their animals vaccinated after two have been killed by mosquito-borne illnesses. The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says a 1-year-old quarter horse in Juneau died of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis ( on July 28, a day after it was paralyzed by the neurological infection. A horse in Chippewa Falls died of West Nile virus on June 20. Eastern equine encephalomyelitis is nearly always fatal in horses but can be prevented by vaccination. DATCP spokeswoman Donna Gilson says the disease has not been seen in Wisconsin for several years but a 2001 outbreak killed 47 animals. West Nile virus is more common, but only fatal in about a third of the cases in horses. 8/18/08 Date: 8/14/08 Advertisement
