USDA co-sponsors international workshop on sorghum for biofuels Aug. 19 to 22The U.S. Department of Agriculture will co-sponsor a conference highlighting current studies and future research priorities in developing sorghum as a bioenergy crop. Other sponsors include Texas A&M University, the National Sorghum Producers, Brazil's Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuaria, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, and Tsinghua University, which is located in the Peoples' Republic of China. The meeting with 100-plus attendees from around the world focusing on key scientific advances supporting the economically viable and environmentally sustainable production and utilization of sorghum as a bioenergy crop. On the agenda to speak are the following: --USDA Research, Education and Economics Under Secretary Gale Buchanan; --People's Republic of China Ministry of Science and Technology Vice-Minister Liu Yanhua; --Oklahoma Secretary of Energy David Fleischaker; --TAMU President Elsa Murano; --Other speakers on the agenda include representatives from the NSP, USDA, Agricultural Research Service, the U.S. Department of Energy and the TAMU Agricultural and Food Policy Center.
