USDA-NASS release August cotton production reportThe U.S. Department of Agriculture-National Agricultural Statistics Service released its August U.S. Cotton Crop production report earlier this month. According to USDA-NASS, of the 9.04 million acres of upland cotton planted in 2008, only 7.65 million acres will be harvested, for an average yield of 831 pounds per acre or 13.25 million bales. In the Southwest, Kansas should harvest about 35,000 acres of cotton, averaging 603 pounds per acre or a total of 44,000 bales. Oklahoma looks to harvest about 170,000 acres, averaging 819 pounds per acre, or 290,000 bales. Texas may be the bright spot across the nation, with an estimated 3.4 million harvestable acres for 2009, out of 4.7 million planted acres. Texas yields may be up to 734 pounds per acre, up from the five-year average of 688 pounds per acre, for a grand estimated total of 5.2 million bales. Yields across all states and all cotton varieties should be up this year. USDA-NASS estimates that the U.S. will harvest 7.84 million acres of both upland and extra long staple cotton in 2008, with an estimated yield of 842 pounds per acre, up from 821 pounds per acre across a five-year average. The total U.S. crop stands to be 13.77 million bales. 8/18/08 Date: 8/14/08 Advertisement
