State gets needed moistureColorado The state of Colorado finally experienced above average amounts of moisture during the week ending Aug. 10, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Aug. 11. Temperatures are still averaging above normal levels but not as extreme as the past few weeks. The improved conditions did little to advance crops this week due to the excessive amounts of moisture and the late timing. Producers were allowed 4.9 days in the field for operations. Spring barley was 96 percent turning color and 21 percent harvested in mostly good condition. Spring wheat was 79 percent turning color, 15 percent harvested and is rated in mostly good condition. The 2008 corn crop was 96 percent silked, 26 percent doughed, and 3 percent dented with the crop in mostly fair to good condition last week. Sorghum was 77 percent headed and 59 percent turning color with the crop in mostly fair condition by week's end. Pasture and range conditions across Colorado were rated mostly fair to very poor. Second cutting alfalfa was 85 percent complete while third cutting was 10 percent complete. The crop was rated in mostly good to fair condition. Death losses for cattle were rated average while sheep and lambs were rated just below average. Stored feed supplies were rated below average. 8/18/08 Date: 8/13/08 Advertisement
