Salazar lauds USDA's decision to allow CRP haying in Yuma, Phillips counties

Aug. 6, United States Senator Ken Salazar lauded Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer's decision to allow emergency haying operations on Conservation Reserve Program acreage in Yuma and Phillips counties, which have been designated as Presidential Disaster Areas because of flooding. CRP acreage in these counties has already been released for livestock grazing.

"In the face of rising floods that have inundated their lands and devastated their feed supplies, our ranchers have had a hard go this season," said Senator Salazar. "These disaster conditions merit immediate attention and action. I welcome Secretary Schafer's decision to open up these lands in Phillips and Yuma counties for emergency haying."

To be approved, CRP participants must write their county Farm Service Agency office, obtain a modified conservation plan, and receive county office approval before beginning to hay.
