OKC West livestock sales reportThe OKC West Livestock Market Inc., El Reno, Okla., reported receipts of 5,375 head Aug. 13, compared to 4,453 head last week and 3,455 head last year, according to the USDA-Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Oklahoma City, Okla. Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers were $1 to $3 higher. Demand was very good for feeder cattle despite the limit up grain futures. Steer calves were lightly tested and steady. Heifer calves were $1 to $3 higher in a light test. Demand for calves improved after heavy rains and cooler temperatures. Many large drafts of feeder cattle off grass continue to come to market. Feeder cattle were in thin to fleshy conditions with average to gaunt weigh-ups, few full. The supply included 79% over 600 pounds, 8% under 600 pounds, 13% cows. The total consisted of 33% heifers. Slaughter cows and bulls were $1 to $2 lower. Packer demand was moderate to good as more numbers begin to show. The supply included several loads of cows from one consignment that were pasture-exposed but not pregnancy-checked. A total of 697 cows and bulls sold with 47% going to packers.
