Fertilizing lawns and upcoming events

By Tara McKnight

Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent, horticulture, Wichita County

Texas

The grass is beginning to green up and with that everyone is wondering when to fertilize. It is always best to fertilize after the majority of your grass has turned green. It is recommended to do a soil test in order to determine how to properly fertilize your yard. If you have not done a soil test in the last three years, you can get one from my office. My office is in the courthouse annex in Wichita Falls at 600 Scott, Suite 200.

If you are not able to have a soil test done, you should use a fertilizer with a ratio of 3-1-2 or 4-1-2. These numbers represent the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the bag of fertilizer. Follow the directions of the fertilizer you buy to know how much to put down.

Upcoming events

There will be a Spring Plant Swap on April 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Belair Park in Wichita Falls. (Baked treats such as cookies and brownies are popular trading items, too....) Bring a folding table to put your swap items on. The plants/goodies that are available for trade will go on top of the table and plants/goodies that you are taking home under the table.
