Corn production forecast at record highKansas The Kansas wheat crop is estimated at 366.6 million bushels, unchanged from the July 1 forecast but 29 percent higher than the 2007 crop. Yield is estimated at 39 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from a year ago. Acreage harvested for grain, at 9.4 million acres, is unchanged from July 1, but up 800,000 acres, from last year. Corn production is forecast at a record high 522.6 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year's production of 518.0 million bushels. Planted acreage is 4.10 million acres, up 5 percent from a year ago. If realized, this will be the highest planted acres since 1936. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain is 3.90 million acres, up 200,000 acres from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 134 bushels per acre, 6 bushels less than the 140 bushels per acre in 2007. Kansas sorghum grain production is forecast at 195.3 million bushels, down 8 percent from 212.0 million bushels in 2007. Yields are expected to average 71 bushels per acre, down 9 bushels from last year's yield. Planted acreage is 2.85 million acres, up 50,000 acres from 2007. Kansas ranks first in the Nation in sorghum acreage and production. Sorghum acreage to be harvested for grain, at 2.75 million acres, is up 100,000 from 2007. Soybean production is forecast at 99.2 million bushels, up 18 percent from last year's production of 84.2 million bushels. Yield is forecast at 32 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year's yield. Planted acres are estimated at 3.20 million, up 600,000 from 2007 and is a record high. Harvested acreage is expected to be 3.10 million acres, up 550,000 acres from the acreage harvested last year. Cotton production is projected at 44,000 bales in 2008. Yield is forecast at 603 pounds of lint per acre. Planted acreage is 45,000 acres, down 2,000 acres from last year.
