Twenty-second annual Flint Hills Beef Fest plannedKansas The 22nd Annual Flint Hills Beef Fest of Emporia is planned for Aug. 15 to 17. This event is a celebration of the Kansas grass cattle industry. There are events for everyone in the family to enjoy. Aug. 15, the festival begins with the Beef Fest Blues and Barbecue Cook-off contest. Contestants can enter in one or all six categories: beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken, pork butt, misc. beef and sausage. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $35 per category or $150 for all six categories. Total prize money of $6,000 and ribbons. For entry forms and rules call Gail at 620-344-3363, fullerfarms@hotmail.com or Joe at 620-343-0538, cableku@cableone.net Live music will be provided by "Johnny Night and the Crawlers" Aug. 15 beginning at approximately 8 p.m. Beginning at 6 p.m., enjoy a ranch feed in the Anderson Building prior to the popular Ranch Rodeo and Businessman Mugging. The rodeo begins at 7 p.m., in the Lyon County Fairgrounds arena. The top teams that have placed in ranch rodeos from surrounding counties will compete for regional ranch rodeo honors. Teams of four businessmen compete to see which team can mug a steer to the ground in the fastest time. Come and cheer your teams on. Tickets for festivities Aug. 15 are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under which includes the ranch feed and the ranch rodeo. Events Aug. 16 begin with the judging of the cattle that were entered in the Grass Futurity. Cattlemen have opportunities to enter steers and heifers in several different contests to compete for more than $15,000 in cash awards. The Grass Futurity is the first contest which began in April. These cattle will be judged on the total pounds gained while they were on grass from April through August. This judging event will take place Aug. 16 at 9 a.m., at the Emporia Livestock Sale Barn. The public is invited to come and enter the judging contest. Contestants with the closest guess to the judge's top five selections will win the contest. Winners will be recognized at the awards banquet Aug. 16. The cattle that were entered in the Futurity can also be entered in the following contests: Stocker Cattle Show, Best of Grass and Show, Feedlot Contest and Carcass Contest allowing more chances for cash prizes. The top seven pens in the two different divisions, steer and heifer, will be eligible for cash awards. Awards will be given in both divisions in each contest and will be awarded as such: 1st Place receives $700 and a plaque, 2nd place receives $450, 3rd place receives $300, 4th place $150, 5th place $125, 6th place $75, and 7th place $50. The Ranch Horse competition is back again this year. This will be held Aug. 16 beginning at 10 a.m. in the arena. Cowboys are encouraged to enter horses to compete in this competition. Horses will be required to do simple reining patterns including boxing a cow at the end of the pen, take cow down fence and turn back twice, rope and drag 20 feet. Added prizes and prize money will be awarded. Call Ryan at 620-341-0721 for more information. A Pedal Tractor Pull will be open to children ages 4 through 12 (contestants cannot be 13 by the first week of September). Prizes will be awarded to each winner for 1st, 2nd, 3rd places in each age group. Anyone placing 1st and 2nd will be qualified to pull at the State Fair in Hutchinson. This will be held Aug. 16, south of the Anderson Building. Registration for the Pedal Tractor Pull begins at 10 a.m. and pull will begin at 11 a.m. The Cow Chip Toss and Catch will begin at 1 p.m., Aug. 16, at the southeast edge of the fairgrounds. Adult and youth teams will pair up to see who can catch the most cow chips. One person will throw while the other catches. Simple, exciting and fun. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. The famous pony wagon rides will return again this year. Bring the whole family out to take a ride around the fairgrounds. These rides are free and will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Don't forget about the free hamburgers. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. we will again have a free hamburger feed at the fairgrounds. Come out and enjoy lunch on us while supplies last. The evening banquet Aug. 16 begins at 6 p.m., with a complete steak dinner. The awards banquet immediately follows at 7:30 p.m. Then for the evening entertainment, comedian Vic Henley will perform followed by dancing till midnight. This is an evening you won't want to miss. Team roping will begin at 10 a.m., Aug. 17 in the rodeo arena. The roping will be a #10 and #13. The roping will be a four for $40 progressive. There will be a saddle fee. Saddle will be awarded to the top money header or heeler of the day. Statements made the day of the roping take precedence over printed material.
