In other agribusiness news....Darren Zink has been named strategic accounts manager for Brock Grain Systems, Milford, Ind. More than 2,300 farmers and ranchers will receive checks in the mail for capturing and storing carbon dioxide in their soil through the National Farmers Union Carbon Credit Program. National Farmers Union President Tom Buis said total earnings from no-till and seeded grassland offsets generated $5,876,825 in income for 2006 and 2007 practices. To date $8 million has been earned by producers since the voluntary program began in late 2006. GenVec, Inc., Gaithersburg, Md., announced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has executed the second option period under a three-year agreement with GenVec to support the development of vaccines for the prevention of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). GenVec will receive up to $6.6 million to complete development activities under the option period. This funding increases the total value of GenVec's three-year agreement with the DHS from $17.5 million to $18.2 million. Under the agreement, the DHS is responsible for conducting animal studies at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center; GenVec is responsible for the development, production, and regulatory approval of the vaccine. Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. and Dow AgroSciences LLC announced an extension of their collaboration agreement to research, develop and commercialize animal health products using Agrisoma's patented Engineered Trait Loci (ETL) technology for gene delivery and expression. Under the terms of the agreement, Agrisoma and Dow AgroSciences will focus on certain aspects of the technology to build upon the significant progress made to date. Fawna Henke is the new program coordinator for Kansas Farm Bureau's Beef Verification Solution team. The Beef Verification Solution offers customized information management solutions that enable beef producers to collect individual animal information, connect to other segments of the livestock industry, comply with regulatory identification programs and improve their livestock operations.
