Don Longley Memorial Scholarship recipients announcedAt the 2008 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference, held in Kansas City, Mo., scholarships were awarded to several commendable individuals. The Don Longley Memorial Scholarship is a $750 scholarship awarded to four high school seniors or college freshmen based upon their Shorthorn interest, grades, need, and participation in other activities. The following four deserving individuals received the award: Cody Leemon, Hoopeston, Ill., Emily Moore, Jerseyville, Ill., Jody Korthaus, Moulton, Iowa, and Blane Osterday, Java, S.D. The Don Longley Memorial Scholarship is awarded through the Shorthorn Foundation in honor of Don Longley, past publisher of the Shorthorn World magazine. He followed his father's footsteps and continued the empire of the Shorthorn magazine, insisting his staff attend every Shorthorn show, sale and conference possible in order to bring Shorthorn breeders the most accurate and expansive information of the time. He worked effortlessly to promote the breed, and his greatest delight was to publish a journalistically superior book. The Shorthorn World was never the same after the Longley era, with more than 50 years of father and son work towards the magazine and breed. Leemon is the 19-year-old son of Scott and Janet Leemon, of Hoopeston Ill. Being a fourth generation breeder of purebred Shorthorn seed stock, Leemon has kept the family tradition going by owning 17 cows, exhibiting at the last 12 National Junior Shows and being an active member in the Illinois Junior Shorthorn Association. Other leadership roles include: serving as president and vice president of his local 4-H club, president and treasurer of local FFA chapter, and receiving the Coaches Award, Captains Award and MVP his senior year in wrestling. Leemon will be a sophomore, in the fall, at Lake Land Community College in ag productions and management. Moore is the 18-year-old daughter of Ron and Lori Moore of Jerseyville, Ill. Her family has been in the Shorthorn business for over 50 years, and she has attended several Junior Nationals. Being extremely active in FFA and 4-H, Moore has won several leadership and project awards. Moore has also held numerous officer positions in both. She will be studying agriculture communications at the University of Illinois, this fall. Korthaus is the 18-year-old daughter of Marlan and Brenda Korthaus of Moulton, Iowa. Involvement in numerous extra curricular activities and showing Shorthorns has kept Korthous busy all through high school. She has been an All-American Scholar, class secretary, and held many office positions including president in 4-H and FFA. Korthaus will be majoring in fashion marketing and management while attending Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago, Ill., this fall. Osterday is the 18-year-old son of Rick and Sandy Osterday of Java, S.D. He received his first Shorthorn cow on his first birthday when the heifer was born that same day. She raised the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the South Dakota State Far, and that was the start of what is today a 18 head herd. Osterday has also been involved in FFA, 4-H and both the South Dakota and American Junior Shorthorn Association. He has held leadership positions in all of them. Upon graduating high school, Osterday is planning on attending South Dakota State University in agricultural engineering. Applications for the 2009 Don Longley Memorial Scholarship are due May 15, 2009, to the ASA office located in Omaha, Neb.
