"Cool season lawns" topic of free seminar Aug. 21

Oklahoma

Residents who would like to establish a cool season lawn or shade grass are invited to attend a free "Cool Season Turf" seminar offered at the Oklahoma County OSU Extension Center.

"Cool Season Turf" will get underway Aug. 21, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., at the Oklahoma County OSU Extension Center auditorium, located at 930 N. Portland.

"It's really easier than most people think to have a nice, green lawn most of the year," commented Ray Ridlen, OSU Extension Horticulture and Agriculture educator. "Some grasses flourish in cooler weather and can stay green and healthy through most of the fall season."

Cool-season lawns also do well for homeowners whose yards are well-shaded and filled with large trees.

The seminar will focus on types of grasses, planting techniques and maintenance schedules, Ridlen explained.

"Cool season turf is a little more difficult to manage than Bermuda grass and requires a different maintenance schedule," Ridlen said. "But having a lush, green lawn in the fall months can certainly be worth it."

The seminar is offered free to the public and is one of several gardening or landscape seminars offered by the OSU Cooperative Extension Service throughout the growing season. For more information, contact the Oklahoma County OSU Extension Center at 713-1125.
