Aphids begin to arriveIowa Hot and humid weather has helped crops to mature during the week ending Aug. 3, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Aug. 4. Aphids are beginning to show up in soybeans, thus causing spraying to occur. Spraying of fungicide and herbicide is also taking place. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.6 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. Eighty-nine percent of corn is now tasseled, which is 12 days behind last year and 9 days behind the five-year average. Corn silked is 73 percent, which is 12 days behind last year and 10 days behind the five-year average. Corn in the milk stage is 20 percent, 43 percentage points behind last year and 33 percentage points behind the five-year average. Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Eighty-three percent of soybeans are blooming, 12 days behind last year and 9 days behind the five-year average. Soybeans setting pods rated 48 percent, 10 days behind last year and 7 days behind the five-year average. Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Ninety-six percent of the oat crop is turning color. Harvested oats for grain is 42 percent, which is 45 percentage points behind last year and 46 percentage points behind the five-year average. Oats condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Second cutting of alfalfa is 71 percent complete, 24 percent behind last year and the five-year average. All hay condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 13 percent excellent.
