Public meetings for reservoir CSP set for April 10, 11

Colorado

If you live within the boundaries of the Upper Arkansas-John Martin Reservoir watershed, you may be eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture's Conservation Security Program. The watershed encompasses portions of eight Colorado counties, including Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Kiowa, Las Animas, Lincoln and Prowers. It also contains a small portion of Greeley and Hamilton counties in western Kansas. The Upper Arkansas-John Martin Reservoir has been designated as Colorado's only CSP watershed for the 2008 sign up.

On April 10 and 11, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and conservation districts in the Upper Arkansas-John Martin Reservoir watershed will hold public meetings to help producers who may be eligible for CSP become acquainted with the program. On April 10, the first meeting will be at 8 a.m., at the Holly Senior and Community Center, 129 S. Main, Holly. The second meeting will begin at 2 p.m., at the Colorado Division of Wildlife office, 2500 S. Main, Lamar. The first meeting on April 11 will begin at 10 a.m., at the Community Building, Kiowa County Fairgrounds, Eads. Later that day, the second meeting will be at the Bent Conservation District office, 760 Bent Avenue, Las Animas at 2 p.m.

NRCS will begin accepting applications for enrollment into the program on April 18 and continue through May 16.

CSP is a program that allows the USDA to reward farmers and ranchers for the sound conservation work they have been doing over the past years

CSP provides payments to those landowners who are already applying conservation practices on their land. It works with landowners to reward them for their good past efforts and provides incentives to move to next level of natural resource conservation.

For additional information regarding CSP, contact your local NRCS field office or conservation district office.
