HOT Training on May 3 at Hill City

Kansas

A Hazardous Occupation Training Course or Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Course, will be held May 3 at the Hill City High School from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. K-State Research and Extension offices in Ellis, Decatur, and Gove, Graham, Norton, Trego and Sheridan counties will be offering this safety training. This is for youth 14 to 15 years of age, who will be doing farm work, for pay, for someone other than their parents. Federal law requires youth under 16 years of age to complete the Hazardous Occupation Training if they will be operating a tractor of greater than 20 horsepower or farm machinery for hire.

The course will cover basic farm and machinery safety. A pre-registration fee of $12 is due by April 18 to your local extension office. This includes refreshment breaks and student manual. Participants will need to bring their own sack lunch. Transportation may be provided with prior arrangements with your local extension office.

Employers who plan to hire youth must realize that they cannot hire youth under 16 years of age without those youth taking this safety course. To register contact the Trego office at 785-743-6361; Ellis at 785-628-9430; Gove at 785-938-4480; Norton at 785-877-5755; Graham at 785-421-3411; Sheridan at 785-675-3268 and Decatur County Extension Office at 785-475-8121 by April 18.

The early registration is important in order for the youth to do some preparation homework before the class is held. Student's date of birth and social security number are necessary when pre-registering.

For a complete listing of Hazardous Occupational Training courses offered by County Extension Offices throughout the state go to http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/agsafety/KHOT.htm or contact your local Extension Office.
