Callicrate scheduled to speak in HoltonKansas Kansas Cattlemen's Association and area businesses are sponsoring an informational meeting and membership drive at the Jackson County 4-H building in Holton at 7:30 p.m., April 10. This event is free and open to the public. Mike Callicrate, a cattle producer and political activist, will be the key-note speaker addressing producers and community members regarding current industry events, including the purchase of National and Smithfield Beef by Brazilian company JBS. Since the mid-1990s, Callicrate has been actively involved in social and political efforts to improve the welfare of family farms and to restore effective publicly-regulated markets. He was a founding member of several farm advocacy groups including the Organization for Competitive Markets, R-CALF, and the Kansas Cattlemen's Association. He also was a lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit against the world's largest meatpacker, IBP (now Tyson Foods) alleging unfair and discriminatory marketing practices. "Mike believes in supporting the family farmer and local rural communities. This is the same principle that KCA was founded on, and we hope that community members from Holton and the surrounding areas will come to listen to what Mike has to offer," remarked KCA Executive Director, Brandy Carter. 100 percent USA Beef hamburgers and refreshments will be provided by free will donation. There will be a small fundraiser auction after the speaking engagement, and KCA Vice President, David Pfrang, Past Vice President, Bruce Rinkes, and Brandy Carter will be in attendance to discuss the work KCA is doing this year. 4/7/08 Date: 4/3/08 Advertisement
