AgriLife Extension to host sheep, goat parasite program

Texas

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Brown County will conduct a sheep and goat internal parasite detection program beginning at 4 p.m., April 10 at the Brown County Fair Barns on U.S. Highway 377 South.

"The whole idea for this program is to teach producers how to monitor parasite loads in their animals," said Scott Anderson, AgriLife Extension agent in Brown County. "We will be viewing fecal samples using microscopes to determine the amount of parasites present. Ideally, we hope individual producers or several producers will buy a microscope together so that they can run their own fecal samples using the knowledge gained at this program."

Dr. Frank Craddock, AgriLife Extension sheep and goat specialist at San Angelo, will be the featured speaker.

Topics covered will include internal parasite control and techniques for detecting parasites.

Participants can bring fecal samples from their sheep and goats for analysis. Samples from individual animals should be placed in a plastic zippered bag the morning of the program, then refrigerated.

The program is sponsored by AgriLife Extension in Brown County and is open to the public free of charge. However, attendance is limited to the first 30 persons who pre-register. To pre-register, call the Extension office at 325-646-0386.
